Zelda's life is in a rut, until the mascot of the local baseball team makes her the object of his comic gags. After an on-field game of musical chairs, Zelda opens her consolation gift to find her favorite candy and a poem that cuts to the heart of her loneliness. It would seem that the man inside the gorilla suit is someone she knows! An unexpectedly deep romance from the award-winning author of The Popcorn Girl.

Mascot a novel Michael J Vaughn 9781518884801 Books

A dark comedy, funny and sad, dreams are born and dreams are smashed, friends are made and betrayed, domestic violence but not like you expect. Poor scary Zelda, mean as a gorilla and also a sexy dancer. Mascot costume gives a place to hide. I hope my random comments don't count as a spoiler. A serious novel is hiding in the mascot suit.

Mascot a novel Michael J Vaughn 9781518884801 Books Reviews

I am a tried and true Michael J. Vaughn fan. I first discovered his unique style of writing with his operatic (literally) masterpiece, “Gabriella’s Voice.” It is my favorite novel, not just of his, but of all that I have read. Being a bibliophile, that is quite a statement. After “Gabriella’s Voice,” I have read, and thoroughly enjoyed, “Frosted Glass,” “Operaville,” and “The Monkey Tribe.” Being a singer, I am most drawn to Vaughn’s writings which involve opera, or music, in general. “Mascot” does not directly center around music, but it has a musicality of its own.
“Mascot” revolves around the relationships of a particularly curvy, baseball loving, pole dancing, hot blooded barista, by the name of Zelda. Zelda, in and of herself, is an interesting character, with many facets. She is kind, generous, and zealous in her life, but also very normal. She has issues with jealousy, and doesn’t always know how to mend her relationships in healthy ways. She is incredibly sexy and appealing, but not as much as her best friend, Zarita, who gets all of the looks and all of the men. The relationship between Zarita and Zelda is my favorite of the book, mostly because Vaughn succeeds in understanding the dynamic between two attractive female best friends, something that is not always apparent with male writers.
The relationship that will grab most readers is that between Edward and Zelda. It is a love story, but it’s also not. Theirs is a dynamic that is not healthy, actually becoming abusive, but not in the most obvious of ways. Edward changes and develops throughout the novel, but he only is able to do so because of Zelda. I almost wish Vaughn had written a more lengthy novel, if only to really make us understand Edward. However, because he did not, we are left with the same impression of Edward that Zelda has throughout the novel. After all, she is the main character.
The novel jumps back and forth between lyrical writing (and even a bit of poetry), and very realistic day-to-day banter. There is a time hop that take a few pages to grasp, but the reasoning becomes apparent later in the story. Vaughn’s ability to make the mundane and banal beautiful is one of his best traits as a novelist. The dance scenes are particularly well written, as he describes movement, but it blurs into the emotion of the dance, just as real dancers do. Without the dances, Edward and Zelda would never have had a real relationship, at all. Both of them develop through dancing under the disguise of the Mascot, Gigante, without which, Edward could not display emotions, and Zelda could not connect with him.
I am intentionally avoiding giving away too much of the plot, because it is a short novel, and one that has a few twists and turns that keep it exciting. Suffice to say, there is a lot of dancing, a lot of baseball, a lot of sex, and a lot of emotion packed into a short 217 pages. Vaughn leaves us with an imprint of who Zelda was, and who she could have been, and the same for Edward. He thoroughly understands the human condition, and his writing truly reflects it.
